## Find your rating first

Not sure of your score? Look it up free by postcode on the government register, then type it into **My score** above: [how to check your EPC rating](https://epccalculator.com/how-to-check-your-epc-rating/).

## EPCs in brief

- **The scale:** ratings run from A (92 points and above) to G (1–20); band C starts at 69.
- **Rentals today:** privately rented homes in England and Wales must be at least band E, with exemptions capped at £3,500 of spending ([GOV.UK](https://www.gov.uk/guidance/domestic-private-rented-property-minimum-energy-efficiency-standard-landlord-guidance)).
- **Rentals from 2030:** band C (or its equivalent in the new metrics) by **1 October 2030** for all tenancies, with a £10,000 cost cap per property. Status: **confirmed government policy, not yet law**; the government response of 21 January 2026 says regulations should come into force in 2027 ([GOV.UK response](https://www.gov.uk/government/consultations/improving-the-energy-performance-of-privately-rented-homes-2025-update/outcome/improving-the-energy-performance-of-privately-rented-homes-government-response-html)).
- **New certificates:** the reformed EPC with new metrics is now planned for the second half of 2027 ([Housing Today](https://www.housingtoday.co.uk/news/government-delays-epc-reforms-until-2027/5141221.article)).
